Protostar Named Leading Employee Engagement Consultancy of the Year 2026

Why keeping people at the heart of employee engagement still matters in the age of AI

We’re delighted to announce that Protostar Surveys and Development has been named Leading Employee Engagement Consultancy of the Year 2026 in Acquisition International’s prestigious Leading Adviser Awards.

This latest recognition adds to our growing collection of awards and reflects both the positive feedback we receive from our clients and our commitment to delivering highly personalised employee engagement surveys.

However, what particularly pleased us about this award was the judges’ recognition of something we believe strongly in: when it comes to understanding how employees really feel, technology alone isn’t always enough.

Employee engagement in the age of AI

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way organisations operate, and HR is no exception.

Increasingly, businesses are turning to AI-powered tools to analyse employee survey responses, identify trends and interpret written feedback.

This approach undoubtedly offers benefits. AI can process enormous amounts of information quickly, potentially saving time and reducing costs.

But does faster analysis necessarily mean better understanding?

At Protostar, we’ve deliberately taken a more considered approach to adopting AI.

We use technology extensively to improve efficiency, including within our back-office processes. However, when it comes to interpreting employees’ written feedback, we continue to rely on experienced human consultants.

And there’s a good reason for that.

Can AI really understand how employees feel?

Imagine an employee writes the following comment in an engagement survey:

“It was great to hear about mass redundancies just before Christmas.”

Clearly, the employee doesn’t mean it was great.

The comment is sarcastic and potentially reflects considerable frustration, disappointment or anger.

While AI is becoming increasingly sophisticated at recognising sentiment, interpreting the full meaning of employee feedback isn’t always straightforward.

Two employees might raise exactly the same issue, such as dissatisfaction with pay, but express themselves in very different ways.

One might be making a relatively routine observation. The other might be expressing deep resentment towards their employer.

Understanding that distinction can be crucial when deciding which issues require urgent attention.

Our concern is that relying too heavily on automated analysis risks overlooking some of the subtleties that make employee feedback so valuable.

That’s why our experienced consultants personally review and interpret employees’ written comments, rather than leaving this entirely to AI.

As our Managing Director, Michael Coates, explained in the award feature:

“AI has its uses, and maybe one day it will be able to understand the full facets of human emotion, perception and behaviours that influence how engaged employees feel – but not yet.”

More than just collecting employee feedback

Of course, interpreting employee comments is only one part of delivering an effective employee engagement survey. Many organisations invest considerable time and resources in gathering feedback, only to struggle with what happens afterwards.

They receive detailed reports, engagement scores and extensive data, but translating those findings into meaningful improvements can be challenging.

At Protostar, we believe the real value of an employee survey comes from understanding the results and helping organisations act upon them.

Our approach combines robust statistical analysis with experienced human interpretation, allowing us to identify not only what employees think, but also the underlying issues that may be influencing their engagement.

We then work with organisations to help them understand their findings and develop practical action plans.

Our consultants draw upon their experience of working with different organisations to advise managers on approaches that have proved successful elsewhere.

The objective isn’t simply to produce an attractive report. It’s to help organisations make informed decisions that improve employee engagement.

Taking the workload away from HR

One of the challenges facing HR teams is finding the time to manage an employee engagement survey alongside their many other responsibilities.

Organising communications, administering questionnaires, analysing results, preparing reports and coordinating feedback sessions can all be time-consuming.

That’s why Protostar provides a fully managed employee engagement survey service.

We can take responsibility for much of the administration, analysis, communications and reporting that would otherwise fall to HR.

This includes producing individual presentations for senior managers, showing the results for their respective areas of responsibility.

We can also facilitate action-planning sessions, helping managers identify priorities and determine what practical improvements they should make.

The result is a comprehensive survey process that provides valuable insights without creating unnecessary additional work for already busy HR teams.

Recognition for a different approach

In announcing the award, Acquisition International highlighted both our highly personalised service and our decision to retain human judgement in an increasingly automated industry.

The publication also acknowledged the excellent reviews we continue to receive from our clients.

Its assessment concluded:

“At a time when AI is increasingly presented as the solution to everything, we were particularly impressed by Protostar’s determination to use technology where it helps, while retaining human judgement where it matters most.”

We’re particularly proud of that observation because it reflects the philosophy behind our services.

We’re certainly not opposed to AI. Indeed, we recognise its enormous potential to improve business processes and make organisations more efficient.

However, we also believe that technology should support human expertise rather than automatically replace it.

And when the subject being studied is human behaviour, motivation and emotion, that distinction becomes especially important.

Is your employee engagement survey telling you the whole story?

Employee engagement surveys can provide organisations with invaluable insights into their workforce.

But collecting data and genuinely understanding employees are not necessarily the same thing.

If your organisation relies heavily on automated survey analysis, it’s worth considering whether important nuances in employee feedback could be overlooked.

Are you simply measuring engagement, or are you gaining a deeper understanding of the issues affecting your people?

And perhaps most importantly, are those insights being translated into meaningful improvements?

At Protostar, we believe employee engagement isn’t just about analysing data. It’s about understanding people.

We’re delighted that this philosophy has been recognised through our latest award, and we’d like to thank all our clients, particularly those who took the time to provide testimonials and feedback.
