Palsgaard Mexico Leaders
Palsgaard Mexico Try Out Their Innovation Skills

Over the last year Protostar have supported a range of organisations to develop a culture of innovation.  Palsgaard in Mexico are an excellent example.  Recently recognised for being the first carbon neutral company in Mexico, they have embarked on a journey of becoming even more innovative, as their influence expands through Latin America.

Firstly we conducted an innovation culture survey and focus groups to identify areas for improvement regarding creating the conditions for such a culture.  From there we designed 4 workshops at which the leaders and key staff were taught a range of techniques for coming up with innovatiove ideas, screening them and inputing them into a bespoke online selection process.

In May, our MD Michael, will be speaking at the 2017 Global Advances in Business Communication conference, to be held in Antwerp.  For this he needs lots of data on how the British might be misunderstood by other English speakers.  For instance if we told you that his talk will be "interesting", would you take that word literally or would you feel it is a criticism?

In a 2 minute survey you will be asked your interpretation of key business phrases and the results will be compared by nationality and by exposure to the British.

To complete the survey please follow this link.

Protostar training at Hilton Hotel SLP
Protostar training at Hilton Hotel SLP

We were delighted to run our second "innovation culture" workshop for Palsgaard senior staff, at the Hilton Hotel.  The workshops are part of a range of activities designed to develop a culture that supports more innovation.  We started with an innovation survey, book club, developing an innovation idea screening system and the workshops are designed to change behaviours and suggest methodologies.

As you can see we motivated delegates with great snacks and sunshine.

Michael Coates Best Paper Award GABC 2016
Michael Coates Best Paper Award GABC 2016

A rather surprised Michael (right) after winning the best paper award at the Global Advances In Business Communications Conference.  His research in to the differences in attitudes to employee engagement surveys by country, was reviewed by academics in the USA Asia and Europe, with no idea who wrote each submitted paper.  Michael was humbled to find that bearing in mind this was the first one he had ever submitted, that it scored the highest.  So now the search is on for the right journal in which to publish his findings.

New Eurostar Train
New Eurostar Train

If you have been on Eurostar from London to Paris in 2016 you will have experienced the new trains.  Protostar are proud to be supporting Momentum Services who are the catering and onboard service teams on the Eurostar trains.

Having had to adapt their ways of working to a new physical environment and deal with the many challenges Eurostar has had during 2015, the senior managers were keen to find out how the staff felt and to have an action plan for ensuring they were all fully engaged.

To that end Protostar ran a bilingual  online employee survey for all staff in London, Brussels and Paris plus focus groups at Eurostars Head Office in London.  Our consultants will now be rolling out the presentation of results across these three countries ...

Michael Coates Interviewed on Mexican Cable TV
Michael Coates Interviewed on Mexican Cable TV

On one of his regular trips to Mexico, our MD Michael Coates was interviewed by a Mexican Cable channel on his views concerning the leadership behaviours required by Mexico's new local government officials.

Obviously in a country where there are some significant issues at local government level, Michael had to balance being diplomatic with giving meaningful advice and he seems to have got the balance right as he was then invited to various government and legal functions.

Nisa is a name many of our UK clients will be familiar with but you might not know that the company is the UK’s leading member-owned organisation, providing benefits to independent retailers in food and drink markets.  Their goal is to support entrepreneurs with buying power, marketing and distribution services
to meet customer needs and to provide consumers with excellent independently run local stores to shop in.

With a new CEO Nick Read, at the helm, massive changes are taking place to bring the organisation into a stronger financial position.  Obviously all these changes can only take place with fully engaged staff so earlier this year Protostar were asked to carry out and employee survey and worked closely with the management team to dr...

Michael Coates And British Ambassador To Mexico
Michael Coates And British Ambassador To Mexico

Our MD Michael Coates was in Mexico again this month, this time as part of a UKTI trade mission for the oil and gas sector.  Starting with a reception at the ambassador's residence in Mexico City, Michael met with senior executives from the energy sector in the UK and Mexico.  By coincidence one of those companies was based about 10 miles from our UK office!  It's a small world.

After the reception Michael met with clients in Mexico city and then proceeded to San Luis Potosi, where he is visiting professor at Tec De Monterrey University.  Michael teaches organizational design and innovation plus he supports a number of their incubator and start up businesses.

Happy New Year

For our colleagues in Mexico, you might not be aware that 2015 is the "Dual Year" a joint initiative between the governments of Mexico and the UK, launched by Prince Charles. This is very timely, as in February we will be formally launching our Mexico office and our new website. Watch this space

Well its December and the weather outside our UK office is cold and crisp whereas in our Mexico office its warm and cosy!  It also seems strange seeing Santa and Christmas trees, when there is bright sunshine beating down on them.

One thing doesn't differ though and that is that the end of the year can be a stressful time for managers.  Annual objectives must be completed, the workforce tend to wind down and take a lot of time off, just at the time when you need a final push to get things completed.  Add to that the grim fact that for many Christmas is a very sad and lonely period, which in all means that managers should be on the look out for signs of stress in their team and tackle it quickly.

On our Stress Management page you can do...

Michael Coates at the Informe De Resultados SLP Mexico

A busy month at Protostar with many inquiries coming in for our new employee surveys that are using a different IT platform and have had a makeover.  To see examples go to our survey page.

Also our MD has posted two new articles one comparing HR managers to Judge Dredd and the other comparing engagement initiatives to a gramophone.  Confused, well take a look and click on the links above.

Michael was also delighted to have been one of only a few business leaders to have been invited to attend the Informe de resultados for the outgoing president of the Legislative body in SLP Mexico.  This group of judges set regional laws and are required to approve national laws.  Michael was introduced to the new President and discussed...

Having been in many discussions this summer with organisations that use executive coaches (and we don't mean a posh bus) it is still surprising how little people know about how to select an executive coach.  Our MD Michael has written various articles on this topic and has made himself unpopular with many uncertified coaches by reinforcing that this is an unregulated industry and just because a business card says "Executive Coach" does not mean they are.  So what should you look out for?

  1. Some form of accreditation such as the Association for Coaching (here is ours) or the ICF.  As there are various levels of membership, find out if they had to prove through qualification or experience to get it. or if they just had to pay.
  2. Look...

British Embassy Mexico City
Michael At British Embassy Mexico City

Our MD Michael Coates, returned to meet the UKTI team at the British Embassy in Mexico City, to review progress on research being carried out into the executive coaching market in Mexico.  Very much like the UK and USA 10 years ago, many "Mexican" companies are looking to provide coaching for their managers but in an unregulated market, are simply using anyone who says they are a coach.  Michael will be linking with certified coaches and the International Coaching Federation to try and raise awareness of when coaching should be used and how to select a coach.

In the mean time, Michael is keen to get in touch with any organisation, with links to Mexico who might require coaching or leadership development (in English) see our co...
