Michael Coates

Michael Coates Protostar Management Training Services

Founder of Protostar, Michael started his career in retail management, progressing into customer service, sales and management training, for high street names and business schools.


More recently, Michael was part of a $14 billion US manufacturing company, for whom he led the HR services group across Europe, Middle East and Africa.


During his 10 years there he had operational control of staff based from Moscow to Zimbabwe and was responsible for all aspects of HR, organisational development and management training.

Currently developing leaders in both the UK and Mexico and winner of the best paper award at the 2016 Global Advances In Business Communication conference, Michael brings a unique global view to everyday issues.


Prolific blogger and author of management articles, plus Psychology and Organisations published by Pearsons. Michael is a regular speaker at HR and global business conferences and is also a visiting Professor at the Tec De Monterrey University in Mexico.


Michael holds a MA in HR Strategy, DMS, plus a Chartered Institute of Marketing Diploma and is a qualified teacher (PGCE) He is also an Associate Member of the Association for Coaching (AMAC) and is one of only a few UK coaches to hold a Post Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching.


Renowned for his confident and engaging style of delivery, Michael can quickly help organisations analyse their issues and he excels at both one to one and group training/coaching. He has recruited staff, delivered feedback, executive coaching and management training across Europe, USA, Mexico, Southern Africa and Dubai.

Sue Timson – Associate Consultant

Sue is an experienced business leader and executive coach. During a 20 year career in media sales, marketing and management she amassed a wide range of experience and led numerous change projects.


At the core of Sue’s experience is 11 years with EMAP, a FTSE 200 company, where she held the position of Group Sales Director and was a member of the Radio Board. Her key achievements were built on developing highly performing teams and her success in the role was based on a combination of clear, strategic thinking and considered, insightful people skills.

Sue’s work with clients includes delivering management training, transforming teams and managing successful change. As a coach Sue is known for her supportive style but she challenges clients to stretch their thinking and achieve their goals. She is a qualified Myers Briggs practitioner and an active member of the Association for Coaching for whom she chairs executive coaching events run at Northumbria University.

Alan Marshall - Principal Consultant

Alan has nearly 30 years of HR experience and brings a number of specialisms to Protostar that enable us to fully support global leadership and HR teams.


Alan's wide ranging HR experience also includes expatriate management with experience in 28 countries, joint venture start ups in India and China plus a broad range of HR responsibilities across Europe.


Additionally European compensation and benefits experience in many countries including the numerous expatriate payrolls.

Alan designed, launched and managed a HR Administration shared service centre and has many years of experience dealing with US organisations. He also offers extensive management training services (IPP Tutor, Presenter, Author and Fellow) and is FIPP accredited.

Dr Bill Moir

A highly experienced HR Director, Bill Moir has provided strategic advice on organisational development and has also implemented tactical learning and development programmes to help blue chip companies and SME’s achieve their goals through their people.


As an executive coach and learning and development specialist, his recommendations and programmes are overlaid with best practice gained from many years practical experience within the field of HR, Learning and Development and Recruitment.

His writing and delivery is therefore informed by the evidence and expertise of working cross culturally with an impressive portfolio of organisations such as American Express, Amnesty International, BAA, Japanese Tobacco International, Local Authorities, Mitsui, Nike, Novartis, NHS Trusts, Microsoft, PRCA and Whitbread plc. This experience has enabled Bill to develop his thoughtful and challenging approach.


Within the field of Organisational Development Bill has been influential with a wide range of businesses in directing the business leaders into adopting both strategic measures and practical applications of theory into practice.


This experience has further enabled Bill to develop his participative and interactive facilitation style, which is further informed by his recent award of Doctor of Philosophy in Human Relations.

Gill Main - Associate Consultant

Gill’s pragmatic, hands-on approach to both leadership/management and personal development comes from operating at the sharp end of business over the last 25 years.


Through her days as a supervisor right up to director of her own companies, Gill’s aim has never changed; to influence the thousands of people she coaches so they understand the impact their behaviours have on themselves and others.


A diverse range of individuals has benefited from coaching with Gill.

As each one shares their professional or personal experiences and challenges, Gill helps them to change their behaviours thus achieving success and overall well-being. This often life-changing result is down to Gill’s unique coaching style which combines traditional leadership development techniques with complementary approaches.

A recent partner to Protostar Leadership Development, Jason runs the highly successful Vita Physical organisation and through that he supports our clients with their well being and Occupational Health issues, particularly to do with Musculoskeletal Disorders.


With an ageing workforce and an increasingly sedentary life style, Musculoskeletal Disorders are one of the most common causes of employee absence.

With a Bsc Hons in Osteopathic Medicine, Jason and his team have an excellent track record of supporting organisations and are a prime example of how we take a holistic approach to tackling management development issues.

Protostar have an office in San Luis Potosi, Mexico and support a local rural community by collecting and delivering clothes/household goods every 3 months.  


On Christmas day we return to distribute gifts to over 250 children.  A highly rewarding and tiring Christmas!
